Robert Felthaus: Swimmers

Robert Felthaus was born and grew up in Southern California, not so much "LaLa Land" in the suburban oppression of the 1950s. An artistic child, making art in his family was not encouraged. So art took a backseat for many years through school, college, and life. In his mid-forties he took a drawing class and his life changed forever. He's been creating art since then. He studied with some fine teachers, fought with some fine teachers, and eventually excelled at his craft. He currently lives in South Florida where he has made many friendships among the artists there. He shows his work locally. And Gay Art Gallery is proud to exhibit a few of his wonderful paintings to a wider audience.

"Artist's statements have a potential for hyperbole - please keep that in mind. I am known as a figure painter, especially of male bodies. The male body is a constant source of inspiration both as object in space and object of desire. My paintings happen when the itch to make marks, to enjoy the art of pushing paint, to transform a photo overtakes me. And don't sweat the meaning of this. To paraphrase the great Santino Rice, "it's just art."
