Adam Kozik
Adam
Kozik attended The American Academy of Art in Chicago, where he studied painting
and drawing. He moved to New York City in the 1990s where his interest in
photography grew. He had the resources of leading art and photography
exhibitions available
to him, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Leslie-Lohman Foundation. It
was not Adam’s intention to be a photographer, and from 1997-2000 he combined
assemblages from magazines with poetry, being inspired by by the work of William
Blake. Adam's study of classic renderings seen in allegoric painting and
sculpture coincided with similar themes in photography he admired, including the
work of Wilhelm von Gloeden, Nan Goldin, Peter Hujar, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bob
Mizer, and George Platt Lynes. He traveled to Europe in 2001, and lived in Paris
for six months where he was introduced first hand to the style of classic
mannerism, which continues to serve as a mainstay in his work today. In order to
create his own images he turned to photography. Interested in portraiture, when
returning to Chicago, he found an entirely new world for the photographer with
gallery associations, commissions, and future artistic course. Adam had his
first shows in the spring of 2007 in Chicago, with two galleries showing his
homoerotic works. Adam’s diverse works - S&M, floral images, still lifes,
and commissioned portraits - are brought together by the photographer’s
constant approach to clarity and honesty.
"I
am very taken by classic renderings of the human form, especially those from
allegoric scenes of painting and sculpture in Western Art. I strive very hard
for my photographs to show those formal ideas with playful honesty and
directness. Composition to me is about seeing the form in an interesting way.
There’s something that happens when I take these photographs that can’t
really be described. What I feel passion for is what I see. Taking a photograph
is about seeing."
