Michael Baker: Masculine Sexy

Michael Baker, 40, is an Atlanta, Georgia based artist. He was born and raised in the Chicago area and attended the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago. When he left school he worked at a major publishing company where he designed textbooks and illustrated children's books, then in advertising. Tired of mid-western winters, he decided to try a warmer climate and moved to South Florida where he continued in advertising as well as showing fine art at a number of local galleries. After a few years he moved to Atlanta, deciding it was a nice compromise between the cold northern winters and the  hot Florida summers. For the last ten years he has continued with advertising on a freelance basis and shown work at a local gallery. Michael has been drawing and painting since age five and began showing work at fifteen. "It wasn't until college that I began drawing the male form. For several years I did graphite drawings, usually of couples. When I moved to Florida I started doing nudes and found a large audience for my work. In Atlanta I continued drawing the male form and explored different mediums and styles, from the very precise drawings to much looser paintings I'm doing today. I explore not only nudes but provocative images of things that I think are very masculine. I love catching a feeling... sexy, wistful, longing. That's what I'm trying to accomplish with my current work."
