Steel is a versatile South Florida artist whose tools range from a paint brush
to a blow torch. Her work includes not only these large scale mixed media
paintings, but large scale "monumental" sculptures as well. Her work
in the art world touches many bases, and she not only creates, but also teaches
art, curates exhibits, and designs museum installations. She also lends her
expertise to creating fine art for interior designers and promoting community
awareness for public art.
"Genevieve creates her paintings utilizing natural elements and power
tools, revealing images formed from the strokes of wet paint, out-lining them
with thick oil-pastels, cutting deep within the wood with the angle-grinder and
even burning a continuous mark with a blow torch. It is not surprising to
identify textures such as clothing drenched in tinted latex, nor is it unusual
to discover hidden subtle forms deep within the painting that suddenly pop out
when staring."
"We are all attached in some way, much like each strand of a spider's web.
Our thoughts create our freedom and decisions, which create the world around us.
Assembling work that portrays industrial strength meeting intimate softness
reflects the frequency of oxy-morons in our society. My work explores this with
great curiosity, combining power tools such as the blowtorch or angle grinder
completely out of their context and into my paintings and sculpture."
