John Gaitenby: Poses John Gaitenby is a North Carolina artist. While his oil paintings initially look like regular figure studies, closer examination reveals a sense of fluidity and sensuality that derive from his skillful and subdued use of colors and brushstroke technique. The images of posed nude models take on an ethereal look. The omission of strong faces actually imparts a character of shyness or mystery to the models, and imbues them with a humanity that makes these paintings so superior to many in the genre. "In my male nude paintings I strive to present the sensuous strength and volume of the male body. I work from live models, photos, and mental images. The settings in the paintings are often created so as to establish a mood that surrounds the model. I continually explore the realm of male imagery in relation to old works from Greece and Italy. I am indebted to the contributions of Robert Mapplethorpe and Keith Haring in the advancement of the male image, its sensuality, and sexuality as a subject for serious art."
