Paul Schaafsma: Personal Portraits
Paul Schaafsma has lived and worked on the central coast of California for many
years. Much of his work takes its inspiration from the beauty of this place and
the people who live there. His work covers a broad range of subjects, including
nature studies, surfing and skateboarding, portraiture, and fine art nudes The
following photographs have as their subject some very good-looking models, nude
or semi-nude, often in dramatic outdoor settings.

"While
there is nothing new in that choice of subject, I believe the treatments are
unusual in their emphasis on mood, expression, personality. I find that a great
deal of male nude photography is focused on the body to the exclusion of
everything else; the images may be very striking but are also, finally,
depersonalizing. My artistic goal has been to create images that are by contrast
strikingly personal."
Paul takes advantage of the variety of California geography - beach, forest,
mountains, etc. He uses a Nikon D100 digital SLR with 6.1 megapixel
resolution and superb optics (using standard 35mm lenses). He makes high quality
prints using an Epson 1280 photo printer and Pictorico Premium Glossy paper.
Even die-hard film photographers are very impressed by the quality of these
prints. "They are sharper, brighter, and more vivid than anything I
personally have seen from a photo lab." In addition to his own work, Paul
has taught digital imaging techniques to local photographers and designed his
own line of computers specially configured for photo- and video-editing. These
"Monster In A Box" workstations have been purchased by photographers
around the country.
