Brian Stewart: The Urge to Paint Brian Stewart was brought up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, where his love of art blossomed at an early age. Being an only child of a loving mother, Brian's interest in art was supported and encouraged greatly. Ever since then he's been drawing, painting, or anything else he can do to express his thoughts and feelings in a creative manner. Aside from the standard high school curriculum, he has been mostly self taught with the help and suggestions of family and friends along the way. Brian has been influenced by the work of a wide variety of artists, such as Caravaggio, Monet, Van Gogh, Jean Michel Basquiat, Francis Bacon, Keith Haring, Jim Avignon and many others. He is currently a college Graphic Design student in London, Ontario. My motivation to paint is spawned in the back of my brain, where all of my most interesting thoughts come from. Sometimes I will wake up at 4 in the morning, stumble to my painting room, and go wild. Making art and creating is an urge I cannot control, nor do I want to control. It's a fun ride. I paint for many reasons, some personal and some just for the sake of painting. The smell of the oil paint, or the feeling of a brush dragging across the canvas is a reason enough for me to paint. Painting, drawing, or basically any form of creative process, is essential to me, as is breathing or sleeping. Although I do not stick with a particular style of painting for more than few paintings at a time; I always stick to my belief that to paint is to express one's self, and one, two, or even three styles cannot express the range of emotions that I feel on a day to day basis. I often think of my paintings as my children. They start off as an idea, then go through a growth process which usually results in layer after layer of paint. When I am fully finished with a painting, it is then when I feel I can set him off in the world - I am always pleased and proud when someone shows interest in one of my creations.".
