Erica Lehnhoff: Soft & Strong

"I began drawing as a teenager, in an attempt to convince myself and everyone else at school that I was cool. Luckily, after the plot failed, I managed to continue drawing and painting into my adult years." Outside of a couple of drawing classes, Erica is mostly a self-taught artist, based in Minneapolis. "Although I'm not a technically trained artist, I am willing to spend as much time as needed on a painting until it feels right. My artwork is more the result of raw motivation than talent." She strongly believes that the concepts of 'talent' or 'natural ability' can make people reluctant to create their own art - she doesn't think people should limit or censor their own artistic curiosities.

"I believe that nearly everyone is fascinated by the human form, yet not everyone necessarily feels comfortable with it. I think that when the subject of visual art is the human figure, people are given the chance to safely explore this fascination. Attention to the subtle details of curves and crevasses are important..., I like to keep areas within my paintings looking a little rough. It makes the painting more interesting."
