Rex Mitchell: Photographs

Rex Mitchell has spent most of his life studying and creating art. His first concentration was sculpture, but now he combines the elements found in sculpture, drawing and painting into photography. Unlike many fellow artists, who refine one particular style or technique, Mitchell has and continues to explore his medium. Mitchell is widely known for his purity of form. Most of his images are uncluttered with background or props; they are black and white with high levels of contrast. His nude models seem to jump forward and come to life whether in black and white, color, sepia, or hand colored images. He is constantly searching for new concepts.

"Each of my photographs has special meaning to me and represents different aspects of my life. Most of the models I have used are close friends or guys who have approached me wanting to be one of my subjects. Much of my inspiration comes from my models, even when I have a plan in mind, the photo session seems to take on a life of its own. Because my first love was sculpture, inevitably, many of my images look as if the were cast from stone or modeled from clay and then painted with light and shadow. For the most part, I am a purist. I find the greatest beauty in the male nude form, but often choose to not give 'full disclosure'. The shadows find hiding places among the contours and the negative space merges with the positive until there is a complete celebration of beauty. It is not until all the elements have merged that I am satisfied. It is my hope that within these images you will discover the secret spirit of the model and the artist"

The works can be framed by the artist in a quality black metal frame that measures 1.5 inches deep with a quarter inch lip; and the photos are archivally matted in black or white with two inch borders on all sides.
