C. L. Cunningham:
Enduring Beauty
___________________________________________
C. L. Cunningham's works involve an
unusual use of artistic materials not usually practiced by other artists. Such intense attention
to the nature of materials derives from her personal artistic vision outside of
formal art training, and assures both the permanence and the purity of her
work. Self taught, Cunningham considers this effort, along with an ongoing study of art
history, the most valuable training available, in addition to countless hours of
actual work. She describes such discipline as ''the clarity of
experience.''
''I am struck by the speed with
which things change around us. The very nature of existence seems to be tethered
to the mercurial evolution of technology. One constant is the need for beauty,
for that which illuminates the human condition, inspiring hope and joy. The more
our world relies upon automation and artificiality, the more we admire evidence
of the human hand. We seek out the objects that reflect the touch of the
creator, the unique vision and refined craftsmanship of the individual artisan.
These are things of enduring beauty and personal significance that transcend
time to exist in a separate place of the heart.''
Cunningham's paintings are highly prized in private and corporate collections worldwide, as
well as heavily awarded in major competitions. When asked what is her proudest
achievement, the artist's answer is immediate - ''Most of my collectors own
at least two pieces, usually more. To me this is the highest honor any artist
can receive beyond the satisfaction which comes from accomplishing the work
itself. It indicates the collector has formed more than just an appreciation for
the subject of a particular work. It means a connection to the spirit of the
work as a whole has taken place. In my world, there is nothing finer.''
These works are all original
''linewash'' paintings, consisting of some or all of the following: watercolor,
metallic gouache, india ink, colored ink, metallic ink, oxgall liquid, thymol,
distilled or salt water; on 140 lb. hot pressed or cold pressed watercolor
paper. They are all matted by the artist, and shrink wrapped for protection. It
is the disadvantage of online presentation, that the viewer cannot see how much
more luscious and vibrant these works are in person. And it is a tribute to the
artist that she has dedicated collectors of her work, and that some now are
being purchased prior to completion.
