Frederick Nunley:
Drawings
Frederick Nunley
holds a BFA in Printmaking from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, and has studied
the art of figure drawing and portraiture extensively. Most of his work is on
paper including relief prints, drawings with ink, conte crayon, pastel, silver
point, and traditional watercolors. His work has been influenced by the work of
artists Paul Cadmus, Charles Demuth, and Jean Cocteau, particularly their same
sex imagery.
"Until the exhibition and publication of these kinds of pictures in the
past few decades, much of the work done by men about men has been hidden, coded,
and edited from our galleries, art history, and the public in general. There is
a lack of male imagery in our art world. I try to find ways to show the male
figure that will appeal and speak to all viewers. I see and sense body gestures
in an unusual way. One of my goals in drawing is to create a vessel of lines and
shades to allow movements to speak. Fifteen years of formal dance training has
played an important role in my life, and helped me to acknowledge movement in a
different manner: movement as language. Simple gestures are expressive.
Capturing them on the page records more than the camera's snapshot - it includes
my reaction to a figure."
