Paintings by Gordon Binder: Gordon Binder is a celebrated Washington, DC artist who has spent the past two decades rediscovering his passion for painting and drawing, and developing his artistic talents. He studied at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, including several years working with noted Washington artist William Christenberry. In 1996, Gordon received the Corcoran's Linda Rosenbaum Scholarship for "talent and artistic excellence." For more than 30 years, he has worked in the environmental field. His degree in architecture, as well as a background in land use and city planning provided Gordon with a base for his artistic ability and his subject matter. "My figurative paintings derive from the people, mainly men, mostly gay, who frequent neighborhoods and places around me in Washington. I record what I see, telling stories, I hope, about their passions and sensibilities. My paintings begin with primary lines and shapes. I use oils with brushes, palette knives, rags, oil bars, whatever, to build up a rich, expressionist play of color and texture in these works." Gordon has exhibited his work in solo and group shows in venues throughout the nation's capital, and his paintings are in collections throughout the country. He was chosen by the editors of the Washington Blade as best artist in their listing, Best of Gay DC. These impressionistic views of the men of DC's gay neighborhood, Dupont Circle, show the everyday aspects of gay life - in the local bars, coffee houses, and on the streets, as well as at the annual Halloween High Heel Race - yet Gordon has an artistic strength and sensibility that makes them beautiful works of art.
