TWO MERMAIDS HUG is part of Maine artist E.M. McFarland's Mermaid Series, and she has exhibited her work in solo and group shows throughout New England. Art has always been an integral part of her life. And she sees music as akin to art as well. "There is so much humanity in a painting or a song... the love I have for creating and viewing art of any kind will never go away."

THE CORE, SHELTER, and SWEAT are pastel and mixed media works by Indiana artist Amy Kennerly. A self-taught artist working since childhood, Amy sees her art as "the process of digging deeper and deeper into one's psyche and not knowing exactly what you are looking for but hoping to discover and create something real." She considers these works as little bursts of light out of darkness. Together for seven years with the love of her life, Amy took her partner's advice in submitting the first work, "to go with what is going on in the world today."

orlynezer

AFTER BATH, a unique relief sculpture by Orly Nezer. The artist discovered the medium as a child and has pursued it ever since. Raised in Israel, she now lives and works in her studio in Ithaca, New York. "In my sculpturing I try to seize upon a certain moment, nuance, emotion. I imagine a posture that expresses the idea of the emotion or situation I have in mind. The act of sculpting is, for me, the most important part of the process . Touching, pushing, modeling. I love the feeling of clay, and the forming of the clay comes directly from my heart. My sculptures are not the least abstract. They are figurative and detailed although the process, which is very emotional, can lead to a very conceptual sculpture."

These five beautiful works are pencil drawings by Laura Rohlfing, a South Carolina artist. She had formal art training, but although she hadn't pursued an arts career, she loves to create. "Drawing has always been a part of my life. The human body inspires my ambition in drawing. I am intrigued by the simplicity of black and white, and enjoy the challenge of shadows on the female figure to give it shape, form, and depth."

She started drawing as a child - her mother was an artist as well - and developed her own style in various mediums - painting, photography, computer graphics. "Because I am a Lesbian, I believe that I have a responsibility to bring some 'Pride' into my work and to portray Lesbianism as a natural and beautiful life." (also see her photo in our Pride Exhibit)

Coughanowr

Cottage View, by L.O. Coughanowr, Massachusetts, acrylic on canvas board. "I spend as much time as I can vacationing at the beach. After the hustle and bustle of everyday living, nothing can replace the serenity of waking to the peacefulness of the ocean view; and I am creatively inspired."
